Gombe Stream National Park is located in western Tanzania, north of Kigoma region about 10 miles (16 kilometers). Gombe is by far the smallest national park in Tanzania, with only 20 square miles (52 km2) of forest running along the hills of the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika and accessible only by boat.

The terrain is distinguished by steep valleys, and the forest vegetation ranges from alpine bamboo, tropical rainforest to grassland. The primarily activity of visitors who pay a visit to Gombe Stream National Park is Chimpanzee trekking provided that the park offers more game than Chimps species.

Chimpanzees are among the popular species in the World which shares about 98% of their genes with humans. These species are unique as they share the human characteristics from the way they mate, large brain, and eating. Chimpanzees found at Gombe that were studied by Jane Goodall have been categorized in 3 communities: Kasakela, Mitumba and Kalande.

Chimpanzees found in Gombe are smaller in size than those found at Mahale Mountains National Park with adult weight about 35-50 kilograms and females being smaller and weighing less, with a lifespan of 30 to 45 years. A chimp baby is born after 8 month of gestation and been breast feed for 2 to 3 years of their age.

Chimp intelligence is displayed greatly in the practice of food gathering and hunting. Chimps are omnivorous; they selectively eat plants, fruit, tree barks, insects, seeds, nuts, eggs and as well as other smaller animals such as bush pigs. They spend at least six hours of their day feeding, with most of that time spent on foraging for fruit, and the rest time divided into eating leaves and other nutrients.

Besides chimpanzees, primates inhabiting Gombe Stream include olive baboons, vervet monkeys and red-tailed monkeys. The park is also home to over 200 bird species and bush pigs whereby chimps feed them. There are also 11 species of snakes, and occasional hippopotamus and leopards. While in Gombe visitors can however swim and snorkel in Lake Tanganyika.
