Nicholas is the founder and director of Big Expeditions. He was born and raised on the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. His Outdoor enthusiasm began when he was only 12 years. His uncle who was one of the best trained and proficient Kilimanjaro guides in the 80’s decided to take the young boy on a six days Kilimanjaro climb. Despite Nicholas’ tender age he summitted successfully, since then climbing has become Nicholas life long passion and decided to become a professional Mountain guide after the completion of his studies.
He has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Kenya, Meru and Oldoinyo Lengai countless times, this has helped him gain confidence and focus. He is known for his boundless energy and enthusiasm for climbing. With Nicholas it does not matter whether you have climbing experience with him you are going to have a truly unique experience.
Over the years he has attended several courses on mountain craft, wilderness first responder, outdoor leadership, first aid and wilderness medicine. Even though he now spends most of his time in the office taking care of logistical issues and other office work he still finds time to climb from time to time due to his great passion for climbing.
Angel is the wife of Nicholas Minja and a director at Big Expeditions. She is also one of the guides of the company. Angel first climbed Kilimanjaro when she was a second year student at the University of Dar es salaam where she was persuing a degree in Public administration. She has attended several courses to high altitude Management and wilderness medicine.
Angel’s relaxed approach and love of the mountain help ensure that you summit successfully. Her other passion is singing. She is a member of the choir in her local church where she has been singing ever since she was a kid. She also gets time to visit Mkombozi School for the orphans that she manages with her husband Nicholas.
REGINALD NGUMA – OPERATIONS MANAGER
Reginald completed his tertiary education at St. Augustine University, Tanzania. Graduating with with a degree in Communication & PR.As Operations manager of Big Expeditions he is a key players in our company. He ensures that our business runs efficiently and in compliance with all pertinent rules and regulations. Reginald makes sure that customers and clients are satisfied, allocates guides and porters on the climbs and Safari guides for safaris.
He develops the company budget in cooperation with the Director, monitors current processes and procedures and create strategies to improve them when he sees opportunities to do so. His job also encompasses the hiring, training and overall supervision of employees.
REHEMA RABSON MZAVA – TOUR OFFICER
Rehema joined a hospitality training institute after completing her secondary education and graduated with a certificate in Hospitality. She is in charge of making reservations in lodges and hotels, booking flights, campsites in the parks and on Mount Kilimanjaro, briefing driver/guides. Managing safari files and guides and porters ‘ records, she also assists with office purchases.
Before joining Big Expeditions in 2010, Rehema had worked with Several lodges in Arusha where she acquired invaluable experience in customer care and front office operations.
AMANI MSHANGA – WORKSHOP SUPERVISOR
Amani is a trained mechanic and he is in charge of our workshop. He makes sure that all our vehicles are in good mechanical condition. Before each vehicle goes on safari he has to inspect it and when the driver returns from safari he hands over the vehicle to Amani with a list of probable mechanical problems that need to be fixed before next safari.
He also purchases spare parts, takes new driver recruits on test drives. You will also see him more often driving one of the company buses or our rescue vehicle.
JACOB MAJI – CHIEF SAFARI GUIDE
Jacob joined a wildlife college for a 2 years course in Wildlife management after completing his secondary education. After college he was first employed by one of the leading American tour operators as a professional safari guide in their Tanzania operation.
He went to Botswana for further wildlife training and on return he was posted to one of the luxury camps in Tarangire National Park where he worked for 4 years as a safari guide in the park. Jacob is an outstanding Safari guide who is incredibly knowledgeable. His knowledge of Tanzania’s wildlife is unrivalled and comes with a natural gift for enthusing clients, who return year after year.
As a senior safari guide, Jacob helps to train new guides fresh from college to gain experience. When not on Safari he enjoys training children on Martial Arts as he has a black belt in Karate.
Mac-Moody Mshana is one of our most experienced and knowledgeable mountain guides. He has been leading mountain expeditions to Mount Meru, mount Lengai and Kilimanjaro for more than 15 years. Before joining Big Expeditions he had worked with several international Mountain Expeditions companies with operations on Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.
Mohamed is a fully certified Kilimanjaro guide with training in Mountain Rescue and is a Wilderness First Responder. He also holds a certificate from National outdoor leadership school (NOLS). He prides himself in helping people attain their goals of reaching Uhuru peak, the highest point in Africa.
Roderick has earned the nickname as the “mountain magician” due to his exceptional skills in making even the weakest climbers summit Kilimanjaro effortlessly. His sense of commitment is admired by all climbers he guides, be it in Oldonyo Lengai, Mount Meru or Mount Kilimanjaro with Roderick as your guide, your chances of summiting are very high.
He started his climbing career at Big Expeditions after attending several outdoor and wilderness First Responder courses. He is also a fully certified Kilimanjaro guide with unmatched knowledge of volcanoes, peculiar geological formations and mountain geography.He has lost count the number of times he has reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in the more than 10 years he has worked for Big Expeditions.
Safi is so passionate about mountaineering that he finds time to climb to keep himself fit even when he is not guiding our clients. Climbing with Safi as he is fondly called is great fun. He is very charming and he will keep you engaged and make you feel that your ultimate goal is to reach the summit of Mt. Meru, Oldonyo Lengai Mount Kilimanjaro or any other mountain you climb with him in East Africa. He is one of our few guides with technical climbing experience after extensive and vigorous training in Mount Kenya.
Safi hails from Kilimanjaro Region and he developed interest in climbing as all his brothers are mountain guides. He is a certified Kilimanjaro guide and has been trained in different aspects of mountain guiding including knowledge of early detection of mountain sickness, rescue operations, administering first aid in adverse conditions etc. He has more than 10 years of mountain guiding which makes him one of our experienced guides. He prides himself as one of the guides who pioneered guiding climbers with no limbs on Mount Kilimanjaro which was no mean feat.
Julius is the most senior guide at Big Expeditions with more than 25 years of guiding experience. He has a calm manner, enthusiastic attitude with a wealth of experience that will make your time with Big Expeditions a memorable one. He is very passionate about taking people of all abilities out and sharing the mountain experience. His ultimate goal is for to summit successfully. He is a certified mountain guide and has worked and guided extensively around East Africa, due to his outstanding work he has been invited by several clients to visit their home countries. Julius lives in Marangu village on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro with his family.
Susan is a trained medical officer and midwife. She fell with climbing when she was invited by a friend to hike on the foot. She brings a great level of enthusiasm and positive energy to the team. Susan is also one of our instructors in first aid and emergency medical care and helps the company reviewing safety standards. When with Susan you can be sure of experiencing a safest and most enjoyable experience possible.
