Mount Kilimanjaro Location

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in a small but fast growing town of Moshi in the Northern zone of Tanzania mainland. The Mountain Kilimanjaro is approximately 3 degrees south of the equator on the borders of Tanzania and Kenya and takes 40-45 minutes drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi town.

Been the highest free standing mountain in the world and the second tallest mountain after Mountain Everest, Kilimanjaro stands at an altitude of 5,895 m a.s.l and can be see as far as far away as the Amboseli and Tsavo parks in the neighboring town of Kenya. The exact co-ordinates of the mountain are 3, 04 degrees south and 37, 21 degrees east. In its entirety, Mount Kilimanjaro is approximately 49 miles long and 24 miles wide.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a distinct volcanic mountain with its three popular craters of Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira (at 3962 meters, Shira is the oldest and smallest peak). The Kibo peak is left dormant rather than documenting it as extinct and it's where everybody dreams to reach at the 5895 meters and 1.5 miles wide.

The Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa and the crucial destination of all summiteers on the mountain. Mawenzi lays some 6-7 miles East of Kibo and rare do people request for its climb as it is a technique trekking and needs special gears. Standing at 16893 feet the peak should be only attempted by individuals with extensive rock and ice climbing skills.

In the year 1961 when Tanzania obtain her independent from British empire, the first president of Tanzania the former Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere assured the implementation of lighting a torch at the top of the mountain Kilimanjaro. The idea behind was to give Kilimanjaro and her boundary a piece of mind that Kilimanjaro is a symbolic of love where there was hate, hope where there was despair, unit where there was disagreements.
